Dear Reader and family, Summer is a wonderful time to continue building the habits, character, and discipline that help children succeed both on and off the mat. At Starworld Martial Arts Academy, our goal is not simply to teach martial arts techniques, but to help develop confident, respectful, responsible young leaders who understand how to apply their training in everyday life. June Character Development Focus: ResponsibilityEach week, our instructors conduct a brief Mat Chat Character Development Lesson during class. The Fourteen Attitude RequirementsThe Fourteen Attitude Requirements of Tang Soo Do apply to all members and serve as guiding principles for the Tang Soo Do practitioner. Every member is expected to memorize them and, more importantly, understand how they apply both inside and outside the dojang. This week's focus is Attitude Requirement #14: Cleanliness Is Required After TrainingKeep yourself and your surroundings clean. Students are learning that responsible people take care of their uniforms, equipment, training areas, homes, schools, and communities. Leadership begins with taking ownership and leaving things better than we found them. A Black Belt does not wait to be asked. A Black Belt sees what needs to be done and takes action. To reinforce this lesson, students will receive in class: ✅ A Character Development Worksheet (Older Students) ✅ A Coloring & Responsibility Challenge Sheet (Younger Students) Cleanliness and responsibility in training Coloring Sheet.png Mat chat_ character development worksheet.png These weekly materials, along with our Good Job Sheets, may also be downloaded from our website HERE. These activities help connect the lessons taught on the mat with everyday life at home and school. Some may wonder what cleanliness has to do with martial arts training. Cleanliness is about much more than appearance. It teaches discipline, attention to detail, responsibility, and respect for ourselves, our instructors, our fellow students, and our training environment. Students who develop these habits often become better martial artists because they learn to take pride in everything they do, both on and off the mat. Parent Action StepTake a few minutes this week to review your child's worksheet or coloring sheet together and discuss ways they can demonstrate responsibility at home, at school, and in our community. Small conversations today help build strong habits and tomorrow's leaders. 📚 Summer Reading ChallengeA Black Belt is a lifelong learner. In traditional Tang Soo Do training, students must learn terminology, forms, self-defense techniques, one-steps, focus, tournament rules, courage, leadership skills, character development, and much more. Reading helps develop many of the same qualities required to earn a Black Belt: focus, discipline, patience, comprehension, stick-to-it-ness, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Our Summer Reading Challenge encourages students to keep their minds active while school is out and continue developing the habits that lead to success both in the classroom and in the dojang. Students can earn: 🥋 5 Books – White Stripe 🎽 10 Books – Starworld Reading Headband 💧 15 Books – Starworld Water Bottle 🏅 25 Books – Grand Champion Reader Award Students reaching the 25-book level will also receive special recognition at the August Belt Test and entry into our Electric Go-Kart Grand Prize Drawing. Physical books, audiobooks, eBooks, school reading, library books, and age-appropriate graphic novels all count. Parent Action StepIf your child has not picked up a reading log yet, please download: Summer reading challenge sheet.png Summer reading challenge at Starworld.png Just as we encourage students to practice their martial arts skills throughout the summer, we encourage them to continue exercising their minds through reading. 🏆 World Championship CompetitorsStudents preparing for the World Tang Soo Do Championships have been offered two special opportunities to gain valuable tournament experience before the big event.
